You have to wonder why people are willing to go on a date with someone that they've never even seen - never mind met - before. You've no idea what the other looks like, does in their spare time, whether they have a sense of humour, and the same applies to them. The key to removing the awkward atmosphere is being natural. If you don't know anything about someone how you can you expect to learn if they change what they're normally like just or the date?
Another good idea is to keep the first date arranged for under an hour. It gives you enough time to get to know them without being overly long should you decide they're not right for you. Plan it as if you're only meeting a friend for a catch up session and you should get a general idea of the duration you're looking for. Let's say you end up arranging to meet up at your local gym when you're normally there. If you find yourself interested then - assuming they feel the same way - you can easily arrange to meet up again sometime in a more "classic" setting. If they're not right for you,you can let them know and still have a good time whole you're there.
